Purchased this item as a back up to my pro Canon 5D MK3 and 2.8 lens outfit.
As somebody who is very pedantic regarding image quality I was very interested to see how this little kit compared to my pro kit. Quite simply its an absolute pleasure to use! the little 18-55 IS lens is very sharp! and YES it compares very well to my 2.8 lenses. My family cannot see any difference.
Overall any of these Canon / Nikon prosumer DSLR's are good enough for 90% of most peoples needs....this with its very enjoyable touch screen, is up there with the best! Far better than any point and shoot / bridge camera.
Pay that little extra out for a DSLR, you'll wish you'd done it years ago ;)

Have had the camera for 3 weeks now and am an avide photo uploader to flickr, in the past i have had to put my photos through image processing in photoshop so that i was happy to share them but i am finding that the photos come out of this camera are such good quality that i am able to upload them with out any processing needing to be done in photoshop. I am using the camera for family photos, landscapes, macro( close up )photography, i have brought another lens to do the macro. The touch screen on this camera is amazing , it makes for changing settings very easy indeed, and it works really well only needing very light touch for it to work . the camera comes set up with help info turned on so for every button you pree info comes up on screen telling you what that button if for, this can then be turned off as you learn what the buttons are.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
