Lenses with a shallow depth of field are great for taking portraits or pictures where you want to give that nice soft blur (also known as bokeh) to the out of focus bits.

You may notice that each lens has another number after it's zoom length (usually following a 'f' e.g. f1.8). This number is the lenses aperture and the lower this number is the more background blur it will give you.

Both protect your camera and make it easier to carry with a good camera bag.

Available in all shapes and sizes to fit every camera type most camera bags will have extra pockets for all of your bits and bobs as well as a nice secure compartment designed to look after your camera.

Use an external flash to light up your subjects brilliantly, or even go one step further and pair up with flash triggers to bring your portrait skills to the professional level.

An external flash gives you a much nicer light and many more options than the in-built flashes, so be sure to pick one up if you're doing a lot of flash photography.

A memory card is a must for all cameras. These cards will store all of your photos and allow you to transfer them over to your computer easily. The bigger the capacity of the card (the number of gigabytes it holds e.g. 64gb) is relational to the number of photos you can hold on the card without running out of space.

Be sure to check if you camera takes regular or micro sd cards though as different camera models will take different types of cards.

If you plan on taking a lot of pictures with you in them then a shutter release is a good investment.

These come either wireless or wired but allow you to take a picture without being behind the camera, great for snapping selfies, or wildlife where getting too close might scare your subject away.

A tripod is a must for any budding landscape photographer.

Having the camera completely still allows you to take long exposure pictures with a slower shutter speed without getting any camera shake letting you get those beautiful waterfall, light painting or night time sky photos we all want to recreate.
