The Speedo swimwear company was founded by Alexander McRae after emigrating from the Scottish Highlands to Sydney, Australia in 1910. He made socks for Australian soldiers in WWI before moving into swimwear and in 1928 he announced a naming competition among his staff. The winning slogan was Speed on in your Speedos and Speedo, as we know it, was born.
