You Garden Thistles Bare Root Collection

Bring extraordinary texture, colour and pollinator appeal to your garden with this bold pairing of Echinops and Eryngium. These two long-lived perennials create stunning displays from midsummer right through to the first frosts, returning stronger every year.

Echinops ritro, known as the Globe Thistle, sends up upright stems topped with metallic-blue spheres that glisten in sunlight and hum with visiting bees and butterflies. Each flowerhead stands proudly above jagged, silvery-green foliage. Once the blooms fade, the seedheads remain standing - a natural ornament for winter.

Eryngium planum, or Sea Holly, brings a dazzling metallic blue tone to borders from June to September. Its spiny, star-shaped flowerheads and silvery stems make a striking contrast to softer plants. Both varieties are highly drought tolerant and thrive in poor or sandy soils where many other perennials would struggle.

These hardy varieties are recommended as 'Plants for Pollinators' by the RHS, as they attract bees and butterflies in abundance. Once planted, they require minimal care, simply thriving in full sun and free-draining soil.
